Segmenting Words
  1. Compound Words - A compound word is made up of two or more words.  Use this website to try to uncover matching pairs of cards.
  2. Elephant Compounds- Help Mrs. Droegmoeller's favorite animals make compound words.
  3. Prefix and Suffix Fun - Use prefixes and suffixes to create new words, with new meanings, from words you already know.
  4. Easy Match - Match the root words with their prefixes and suffixes.

Syllables

  1. Syllables Quiz - Take this quiz to check your knowledge of syllables.
  2. Syllables Factory - This site will help you practice how to break up words into chunks of sound. This will help your spelling!
  3. Space Station - Have fun dividing the words in blue into syllables and enter it into the box with a "-" between the syllables.  Example fi-nal.
  4. Breaking Up - Breaking up is hard to do, unless you're breaking up syllables of course!  (Uses Bridge to Terabithia words!)
  5. Syllables on Youtube - This video shows how to break down a word using syllables so you can sound it out.


Phonemic Awareness

  1. Phoneme Sandcastle - Build a sandcastle by clicking on the sand-pie with the correct spelling to fill in the gaps in the words written in the sand.  Be careful of the English accent!
  2. Missing Letters of the Alphabet - Position the cursor inside the box, then use the keyboard to fill in the missing letters of the alphabet.

Word Recognition

  1. Dolch Word Games- Various games for instant word recognition - can you handle it?
  2. Have an underwater adventure on The Reef of Lost Words. These classic word search games are great exercises in word recognition, spelling, and reading.

Spelling

  1. Spelling City - Type in your spelling words for this week and listen/study them, play games with them and take an auditory spelling test on the computer!
  2. Cliffhanger - Guess the missing letter in the word to move up to the next level.
  3. Have an underwater adventure on The Reef of Lost Words. These classic word search games are great exercises in word recognition, spelling, and reading.
  4. Hangman is the classic word game. In this version you have to save Broose Kaboose from falling off his track and meeting watery misfortune.  Broose Kaboose is perched on a crumbling bridge. Your goal is to prevent him from falling by guessing the right letters to solve the mystery word.
  5. 8 Letters in Search of a Word- How many words can you make using only 8 letters?
  6. Play a little Monster Hangman.  :-)
  7. Play Word Morph by changing one letter the in the starting word to form a new word.  Repeat the process until you spell the ending word.  This game is challenging, but all puzzle pieces can be solved.
  8. Popword is too much fun!  Highlight the letters to make a word, but all of the letter balls have to touch.  Beat my score and win a prize!
  9. The aim of Eight Letters is to gain points by creating words from the selection of eight letters given to you on the screen. Longer words are give more points.
  10. Look, Cover, Write, Check - Practice your spelling words using this site.
  11. By playing Spell Check you get to be the teacher!  Place a check next to the word that is spelled wrong.
  12. Stay Afloat is similar to hangman, but in this version you get to pick the kinds of words that you'll play with such as sports words, science words, social studies words.
  13. Twin sisters Pearl and Flora lost their friends in the bubble machine! Help them get their friends out by choosing the correct plural form of the given word.
  14. Word Confusion is a game that plays around with homophones.  Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings.
  15. Pixie Pit - You can make fridge magnet poetry or play scrabble for fun.



Vocabulary Games

  1. Vocabulary Carnival - Use the definition to figure out the vocabulary word.
  2. Multiple Meanings - Multiple meaning words are ones with more than one definition. In this activity you will be asked to find the word given two common meanings.
  3. Ball Hogs - Identify the synonyms of words that you know.  Can have up to 8 players.
  4. Escape Planet Zug - Use your knowledge of words to escape the scary purple planet.
  5. Words in Context - Figure out the meaning of the word in the sentence to throw a pie at Mr. Duck Von Fly.

Semantic Mapping

  1. Categories Battleship - Try and sink the computer's battleships by naming the correct category for the words listed!
  2. Columns - You are given three things on one side and a list of categories on the other. Can you match the items with their correct category?
  3. Rags to Riches - You will be given either 3 or 4 members of a certain category. Name the group or category these members belong in and climb the ladder!

Cross Curricular Extensions

  1. Use your Social Studies, Science, Math or ELA vocabulary to make a Jeopardy game for your class to use.

  1. 12 Angry Pigs - Work together to perform this play.  It is about a jury of pigs who must decide on the guilt or innocence of the so-called Big Bad Wolf.
  2. Terri and the Turkey- Another play to perform and practice your fantastic fluency.  In this short Thanksgiving play, a young girl saves the life of a Thanksgiving turkey. A family-friendly Thanksgiving skit.
  3. Kidsinco.com - Plays for you to perform.  Be sure to click on "Page 2" at the bottom for more choices.
  4. It's fun to read!  Here are some plays, stories, comics, folk tales Greek myths and Chinese fables to read.  Click on the picture of an ear to have the computer read it out loud.
  5. Homework Excuse Creator - Spin the wheel to find an excuse for not doing your homework.  Remember to practice your fluency for a believable delivery to your teacher.


Semantics Training

  1. Our friends, the Grammar Gorillas, need help identifying parts of speech. If you click on the right word in the sentence, our friends get a banana. And you know, a gorilla with a banana is a gorilla with appeal.
  2. Apostrophes Games - There are two games to help you practice using apostrophes.
