A Passion for Reading

My great-grandma Hoffman was an avid reader, so was my Nana, my mother and now you can't find me without a book in tote.  All of the beautiful and strong women in my life had their noses snugly tucked between pages of mysteries, biographies, and even those Harlequin romances.  Not only do I read for fun, but I read to educate myself and my students. The inspiration for this site came from seeing dedicated teachers ask for reading resources and struggling readers demand fun ways to reinforce reading skills.

My Intent
This site is a product of my Graduate thesis and on it you will find 20 best practices strategies for struggling adolescent readers in four key elements of reading: word-level, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.  The first four pages are for teachers and parents.  They provide an explanation of the four specific components of reading, five valid and credible research-based strategies for each component, and external links to help teachers and parents supplement the information provided.

The last page titled, "Fun Reading Games for Kids" provides direct links to interactive websites that students can use to reinforce classroom activities and learning.  The links are numbered so teachers and parents can give exact directions for working on a specific skill.  For example, a teacher can tell a student to work on word-level skills using link #7 under "segmenting words" or give choices by saying, "I would like you to focus on spelling today" and let them explore all of the fifteen spelling links.

All-Purpose Links to Help Struggling Readers

NYS Curriculum and Instruction - This link will take you to the current NY state standards.

Common Core NY State Standards Initiative - The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Reading Rockets - Did you know that learning to read is a challenge for almost 40 percent of kids? The good news is that with early help, most reading problems can be prevented. The bad news is that 44 percent of parents who notice their child having trouble wait a year or more before getting help.

Limitations

Please know that the hyperlinks are meant to provide a specific pathway to a particular web page.  It is, however, possible for students to self-navigate away from the locations that I have provided to other un-endorsed websites.  Students should always be monitored when they are on the internet at all times.

Because the internet is ever-changing, some websites may be deleted by their authors or changed entirely without my immediate knowledge.  I will monitor these pages regularly, but if you notice an odd link please feel free to send me a note using the contact form below.

Also, because these websites are free, some of them have advertisements or pop-ups.  This is another reason to monitor children on the internet at all times.

Many of the phonics based interactive games may feel "elementary" to the adolescent reader.  Unfortunately, at this time, it cannot be helped.  I am always on the lookout for more high-interest sites, so please send some to be added to Miss Hall's Reading Corner via the contact form below.

(If you are a website designer looking for an untapped market, there is a great need for phonics based online games for the struggling adolescent reader - cha, ching $$$.)
